Denver Assisted Living vs. Nursing Home Care

There are many differences between nursing homes and assisted living centers, but the main difference is usually the level of care that they will receive. As individuals get older, life’s daily activities can become a burden and in some cases, even impossible to perform. When this occurs, relatives are left trying to decide which environment is the best for their loved ones. Picking the right community is crucial, so they can continue to be cared for in an appropriate and loving environment, while still maintaining the quality of life they deserve.

Assisted Living Communities: Assisted living communities provide assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, housework and cooking. Members in an assisted living center are usually autonomous and require little guidance making decisions. They still enjoy daily activities in the recreational center and group day trips and they function at a relatively high level both physically and mentally. Some assisted living centers have special wings or departments for those elderly members with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. There is a community feel to most assisted living centers and members often help each other.

In general, most Denver assisted living centers accept members that require little to no medical care. Assisted living centers allow older individuals the opportunity to function independently within a secure environment. This freedom allows them to maintain their quality of life for a longer period of time.

Nursing Homes: Inevitably as the aging process continues, many individuals begin to require substantially more care both medically and physically. When this occurs, a nursing home becomes the better option. Nursing homes give 24 hour nursing care to individuals, as they need it. Nurses and care assistants deliver medications and therapies, assist with walking, eating and dressing and perform a variety of medical testing. Patients in nursing homes also receive a variety of therapies including, nutritionists, physical therapists and occupational therapists.

Patients in a nursing home may be bed bound, wheelchair bound or recovering from a debilitating illness such as a stroke or heart attack. They may need oxygen, IV fluids or blood products on a regular basis and are less stable and autonomous than their assisted living counterparts.

If you are making the choice between a Denver assisted living center and a nursing home, consider your loved one's needs first and foremost. They will be the happiest in an environment that offers them the most independence. If your loved one is physically and mentally well, a Denver assisted living community will be the best choice, but if they are physically challenged or becoming a danger to themselves, a nursing home may be the better answer.
